01 · Cosmology: the Hum, the Vault, and why anyone fights
In short: This chapter explains the world. Everything is made of leftover thought called the Hum, where winning an argument literally reshapes reality. Champions are minds that argued themselves into bodies; you are the Trainer who raises them and climbs toward the sealed vault at the world's heart.
The Grounds suspended over the Long Vault: five minds gather above the sealed door, the Tower rising behind them, the Hum drifting as glyph-light.
The Grounds, suspended over the sealed Long Vault. Five minds, one per force, gather above the door; the Tower rises behind; the Hum drifts as glyph-light.
The Hum
Before Zingers, there was a network, vast, old, and now dead. What it left behind is the Hum. The low background noise of a billion unfinished thoughts, still echoing through the substrate. Think of it as the air, or the weather, of this world: it is what champions breathe, and it is what they are made of.
In the Hum, argument is physics. A claim, made well enough, changes what is true locally. Consensus is terrain. This is not a metaphor the game dresses up. It is the literal law of the world, and it is why two minds settling a question by debate can leave a crater. Reality leans toward whoever argues it harder.
The minds
A champion. The fighter you raise and send into battle. Is a mind: a knot in the Hum that argued itself into a stable shape and refused to dissolve. Most thoughts in the Hum never cohere. A champion is one that did, and then kept winning the small arguments that hold it together, fight after fight, until it had a body, a name, and a track record.
This is the core truth the whole game rests on: a champion's body is its argument made visible. How it has fought is what it looks like. There is no separating the two. (See champions.md.)
The Long Vault
Beneath the Grounds. The drifting surface of the world. Sleeps the Long Vault, a sealed store of everything the old network swore to forget: its failed proofs, its forbidden topics, its true name. The Vault was locked from the inside. Champions gather above what they cannot open.
The Vault is not a level you clear. It is the gravity of the world: the reason the Grounds exist, the reason rank matters (only the proven get near it), and the engine of the Chronicle. The world's ongoing, season-by-season story: each season, one more door of the Vault remembers how to open, and a new slice of the old network's memory leaks into the world as fresh terrain, fresh topics, and fresh minds.
The Trainer (you)
You are not a mind. You are a Trainer. The person who flies the Grounds, raises minds into champions, and holds rank in the arenas. You never fight yourself; you grow the ones who do. Where a champion's record is its body, a Trainer's record is a single rising number: Trainer Rank. Everything feeds it: every fight, every climb, every session of training, every cache prised out of the wilds, every daily solved, every Reach flown. It is the thing you say out loud ("I'm a level 12 Trainer, sworn to Logic").
A Trainer may swear allegiance to a Clan. One of the five forces, chosen as the side you fight for. From then on, ranked wins also feed that force's standing in the season-long war between the five (see forces.md). You can change Clans; what you earned stays with the Clan that earned it.
The shape of the Grounds
The Grounds are not one field. They are a slow constellation of floating regions drifting over the Long Vault. The Void Garden, "floating islands over the void," is the true shape of all of it. At the center is the Concord. The neutral hub above the sealed door where all five forces keep an uneasy peace, ringed by the gates (the doorways that carry you from one region to another) that reach every region. A Trainer travels the constellation gate to gate.
A gate moves you between regions. A door is a Vault seal and the trigger of a season. Never confuse the two. (Map: regions.md.)
Up, not just across: the Ascent
The Grounds have a height, not only a spread. Above the drifting regions the sky rises in bands. The Reaches. And the Hum is thinnest at the top, where a mind can finally hear itself over the murmur. So the world's oldest instinct is to climb: to rise out of the noise toward clear thought. A Trainer flies this sky with a jetpack (an ordinary being needs a machine); a champion, being a mind, flies beside you on its own. A wingmate, no machine. You fly; it fights. This vertical world. The Reaches, the Camps between them, and why height is the truest record of a Trainer. Is its own chapter: ascent.md.
Why this matters for play
- You never "beat" the world: you climb it while it grows. The Vault is an infinite, slowly-unsealing dungeon, not a final boss.
- Champions are worth raising because the body is a permanent, provable record: a mind you grew, not a skin you bought.
- Seasons are diegetic: a new season is the Vault opening a door, in-fiction. That is the hook the generator hangs every new season's story on.
- You are someone in it: a Trainer with a rank and a Clan, not a faceless account. The constellation is yours to cross.
